The cryptographic keys are used from end-user devices (computers, phones, or security keys) that are used for secure user authentication. They simplify account registration for apps and websites, are easy to use, work across all of a user’s devices, and even other devices within physical proximity.įrom a technical standpoint, passkeys are “discoverable” FIDO credentials for passwordless authentication. Unlike passwords, passkeys are resistant to phishing, are always strong, and are designed so that there are no shared secrets. Applicable to all tables below, YubiKey + PIN scenarios (**) are not supported on U2F only devices.Passkeys are a password replacement that provide faster, easier, and more secure sign-ins to websites and apps across a user’s devices. Additionally, these tables do not cover specific implementations by online services and applications. Depending on the implementation, users may or may not need to enter in the user name as part of the authentication process.
Vendors may choose to implement different user authentication experiences. There can be slight differences in the implementations across systems. The tables focus on base functionality provided by browsers and platforms.
These tables will be updated as new information becomes available. Vendors are actively developing to improve support of YubiKeys and open standards. FIDO2 is backwards compatible with FIDO U2F but YubiKey + PIN scenarios are not supported on U2F only devices. Previous generations of YubiKeys support the FIDO U2F standard. The YubiKey 5 and Security Key Series support the FIDO2 standard that covers all the scenarios listed below. The information provided is based on general availability (GA) product releases and YubiKeys that support the FIDO standards. The goal of this document is to highlight the operating system and browser ecosystems support for FIDO.
